Beyond The Broom

elementary school custodian, retirement, students, kindness, acts of service, making a difference, life lessons, meaningful connections, Stories That Made Me

For many years, I served as an elementary school custodian, taking care of the building and meeting the needs of the faculty and students. It was a demanding job, but I truly loved it. My love languages are words of affirmation and acts of service, so this role suited my personality perfectly. While there were moments of frustration, everyone knew I cared deeply about them.

The Mystery Casserole

The Mystery Casserole card featuring three people reacting with surprise to an unusual casserole at a church potluck.

Our church announced the annual potluck dinner three weeks in advance, which gave everyone plenty of time to promise they would bring their “famous dish.” By Sunday evening the fellowship hall smelled like twenty different kitchens at once. Folding tables lined the room, each one slowly filling with casseroles, salads, pies, and things that looked like they had been invented only minutes before arriving.

Brother Jenkins brought his famous baked beans, which he claimed had won three county fairs and one family argument. Sister McCall proudly set down a giant bowl of potato salad that looked capable of feeding an entire scout troop. Meanwhile, someone quietly placed a mysterious casserole in the middle of the table and slipped away before anyone could ask questions.

A Journey to Reading

When I was a small child, I struggled immensely with my ability to read. I was born with a lazy eye and astigmatism, which meant that for the first four years of my life, I wandered around half-blind. When I finally got glasses, it felt like a whole new world opened up to me. However, while I could now see clearly, I was developmentally behind my peers in many ways, including reading.

I was talking to my brother Wes while waiting for my daughter Jessie and my wife Cassie to land at the airport. They were returning from visiting family in Texas. I asked Wes how his life path might have been different if he had not decided to go to the high school where our dad taught.

For years, my dad was a math teacher at East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah. A few of my siblings struggled at the high school near our home. My parents asked if they wanted a fresh start at a different high school, and they eagerly agreed.

Certainty and Curiosity

Consider This: Certainty and Curiosity card featuring a sunlit forest path with the message that curiosity keeps learning alive.

There is comfort in being certain. Certainty gives us solid ground. It tells us where we stand, what we believe, and how we understand the world. But certainty can also become a quiet stopping place. Once we are convinced that we already know the answer, we often stop asking the questions that might teach us something new.

Curiosity works differently. Curiosity doesn’t require us to abandon what we believe. It simply leaves the door open. It allows us to say, “This is what I believe today, but what else might I learn?” That small question can change the way we see people, ideas, and even ourselves.

Welcome to Len Fish: Stories Worth Sharing

Welcome to Len Fish

I have a short attention span. There—I said it. Give me a good story, make me laugh, make me think, or teach me something interesting—but please don’t make me read twelve pages to get there. That idea is at the heart of LenFish.com.
